About

A favorite quote is Eleanor Roosevelt's "Do something that frightens you every day." At the entrance to our house is a red dragon, and across the wall above our refrigerator are the words, "Here be Dragons." This comes from mapmakers who printed these words on maps in the boundaries beyond the known world because it was assumed that boats would drop off there and be consumed by dragons. But some frightened but brave explorers went there anyway.  For me this phrase means that only by being a little afraid do we grow. Read on to learn more about how I'm stepping into being bolder.

Background

Despite the wonderful things I've been able to do with my life, I have always wanted to be an athlete and an artist. The joints are all bad now so I'm focusing on one thing, art! I’ve been painting pretty steadily for the past five years and seeing a lot of improvement. Sometimes I bemoan the fact that great artists seem to have been doing it all their lives and may have had years of classical training. That puts me way behind the curve. But I truly believe that part of being a good artist is being courageous. Too many of us choose to emulate other artists or take tiny, safe brushstrokes. My goal is to share my journey, hoping that someone else can catch the joy I feel when I’m in my element.

Want More?

If you are really interested in the rest of my life: I am in my 70s. Holy crap—how did that happen? I live in Manhattan, KS on 4 and a half of God’s chosen acres, full of flowers and trees and a view of a lake that frequently find their way into my art. I’ve been married for 50 years to my best friend, Rick, who puts up with each of my reinventions. We have three sons, three daughters-in-laws and three grandchildren that bring endless pleasure.
